Grilled lettuce

Posted in Leisure by joelmartin on June 5th, 2008

For about eleven years I have wanted to grill lettuce, but somehow have never gotten to it. Yesterday, due to the inspiration of my lovely wife, I did so. She prepped it, so I don’t know all of what went into it. I think it had some oil on it, and lots of black pepper. I put it on low heat directly on the grill for two minutes. It was cut in half. The cut side was down. It was delicious and I can’t wait to do it again. A picture is below.

Nationals Park

The Nationals game two nights ago was very nice, and a quite cold. It had to be the coldest night in recent weeks, and the stadium was something of a wind tunnel. We took the Metro in, and it was packed. Lots and lots of fans in their red jackets, shirts and hats supporting the Nats. There were Braves fans too. That’s what you get in a city like D.C., where people are almost all from somewhere else. The various Metro stops had police officers and Metro workers directing fans to the right train for the park. At the Navy Yard stop, which is where the stadium is, the amount of people moving through was huge. There were three escalators from the station to the street level, and then the entire street that leads up to the front gates is blocked for pedestrian traffic, so you have a nice community feel of people streaming into the Park.

The Park itself is very clean and bright. There seems to be a concession stand, restaurant or bar every five feet, my how times have changes. I mean, concessions were big at the Metrodome, but nothing on the order or magnitude of this. The team is making sure that every possible dollar is wrung out of the stadium, and the entire design assists this. But I’m not complaining. It’s nice to not have to walk a mile between innings to get to concessions, they are always right next to you.

The stadium broke with the trend of the past 15 years for old fashioned looking parks, pioneered by Camden Yards up the road in Baltimore. I prefer the Camden Yards look to this sort of generic stadium, but it is very clean, and very “federal” in keeping with the locale of D.C.

The game was pretty good, it moved fast and the Nats got back to back home runs that put them ahead. They eventually won and all was well. It’s a great location, and the views inside the Park are all good. I hope to get back soon with the boys, and maybe haul them up to Baltimore for a game too, if time allows.
